This figure is based on a theoretical action which fortunately never
happened.

This figure is based on a couple assumptions, one the Iran - Iraq War is
still going on in 1986 (which I think it was), two that the Osirak raid
didn't hit its mark or Iraq had a bigger nuclear program than Israel
expected.

Anyways...
Iran and Iraq are still bogged down in their war.  Saddam Hussein is not
happy with the prospect of defeat.  So he decides to hasten the end of the
war.  He launches one of his nuclear weapons towards Tehran.  The world
rightfully condemns this attack as the first use of nuclear weapons in 
40 years.  Iran doesn't sit back idle, it seems they had agreements with
other parties and soon Baghdad is engulfed in a mushroom cloud.
The Soviet Union not happy with the prospect of a nuclear war on its borders
decides to intervene.  Soon mechanized units are pouring across the Iran
border and make rapid advances.
The United States caught completely by surprise and not happy about the
prospect of Soviet troops in the Middle East decides to deploy the RDF
to Kuwait.  Soon they are in Iraq and approaching the Soviet forces.
A nervous peace between the two superpowers ensues....but for how long...
